Our Work

We're very proud of what we do and always strive for excellence in quality and design. We don't work off templates, kits or flat packs. All of our work is bespoke to every client's needs. We can even develop on what's already there. We specialise in fully insulated, multi-purpose timber framed buildings that can be used in all seasons. A fantastic addition to any home.

Please take a look at the variety of our work below.

Music Room & Library

The client needed a room where they could take online piano lessons and house their extensive collection of literature. The room would also be used as an entertaining space. As they were also keen, creative gardeners, we included a porch and trellis which could be home to some beautiful climbing plants. We decided to finish with British Larch painted in a deep sage green with natural wood accents on the porch for contrast.

The 'Barn'

One of our personal favourite projects. Mainly down to the challenging nature and overall result. Standing at 6m x 3m with a sheet metal roof and blackened cladding. This show stopping creation houses an office and recreational space with a french doors leading onto a patio and a secret hidden door to the side. Full of quirky charm, we also restored and fitted beautiful reclaimed vintage pine flooring. The apex ceilinged room is filled with natural light via the glass french doors with a bullseye window above, a full length window to the side, a letterbox casement window over the desk and 2 large triangular windows in the apex at the rear of the building. Just beautiful!

Existing Outbuilding Conversion

Giving an old building a new lease of life is something that we love to do. The existing building consisted of a small store and a small dark office with an open porch area between, all covered by a leaking pitched roof. We took off the roof and the front wall and redesigned the space with a larger office and separate store both accessed from the front. We replaced the roof with a flat EPDM rubber roof which allowed more height on the front wall for patio doors and 2 full length windows to make the office a lovely light filled room. Restoring and re-using the original cedar cladding saved on a big portion of costs.

Shou Sugi-Ban Garage

This one really is a head turner. 6m x 5m timber framed garage/workshop with a 3m x 5m storage mezzanine.  The structure is clad in British Larch which we treated using the ancient Japanese wood scorching method 'Shou-Sugi-Ban', making it resistant to weather, fire and insect infestation. Accesssed from the front by a remote controlled sectional garage door and from the side via a reclaimed composite door. 2 large high level windows to the rear and a bullseye window in the mezzanine allow plenty of natural light into the building. The pitched roof is finished with felt shingles and a bespoke weather vane.

The Cube

Set in the centre of the walled garden of a beautiful Georgian townhouse, this stunning leisure space is a perfect retreat for relaxing with a good book and glass of something special any time of the year. Full length windows front and back give a vista up and down the garden and fill this room with natural light. The client opted for no electrics and wifi, making this a tranquil haven from the stresses of life. The flat roof incorporates a hidden gutter and downpipe to keep the external lines of this building super sleek and sharp.

The Workout Space

This sporty family required a custom designed home gym with a heavy duty sprung rubber floor and a large wall mounted TV so that they could tune into Sky Sports whilst training. We also landscaped the area with blue slate chippings to enhance the overall appeal of the setting. We used Siberian Larch cladding for the exterior of the gym.

The Salon

This was our very first commissioned work, you could say the dawn of Inside Out Design. A friend saw the garden room that Jon had built for himself as an office and leisure space (which has now been overtaken by his wife as a gym) and asked if he could build one for her. Lucy needed a home hair salon as she was doing hairdressing in her kitchen after the birth of her first child. Jon dismantled their existing garden shed and replaced it with an L-shaped building that housed a salon, chill-out area and an attached storage space.

The Practice Pods

This was a very exciting project commissioned by the highly prestigious St. Peter's School in York. We created a group of 'glamping' pods connected by a decked balcony that would be used as practice rooms by the school's music department. Each room is insulated using rockwool slabs to help with soundproofing and covered in composite shingles. The interiors are lined with pine tongue and groove. We have since created individual pods as compact garden offices for people continuing to work from home after the pandemic.

Maggie's Bar

This is a very personal project, a home bar dedicated to the memory of Jon's mother-in-law, Maggie.

Pictured here with his wife Sarah, who helped with the build, Jon constructed the entire bar from reclaimed, salvaged and recycled materials.

The bar (and kitchen) houses a barbeque (salvaged), pizza oven (rescued), wine cooler (reclaimed) and a Perfect Draft beer pump (2nd hand). Being a rather frugal character, Maggie would be proud.

All that's left to do is add concrete worktops mixed with Maggie's ashes and a drop of her favourite tipple. Cheers!
